My Process

Consultation

This is the time for us to simply get to know each other. I will ask questions to learn more about your needs and how I can be of help. Consultations can be conducted via email or a scheduled video call.

Contract & Estimate

A contract (for new clients) and estimate will be provided and must be accepted before I begin editing. The estimate will include the estimated number of hours it will take me to complete the tech edit as well as timeframe. In order for me to provide an accurate estimate, I will first need to see the full pattern. I do my best to overestimate the amount of time needed to avoid any surprises. Once the estimate has been accepted, I get right to work editing your pattern.

Communication

I believe strong communication is the key to a great working relationship. Email updates will be provided weekly, or at another agreed upon interval. Questions during the editing process are ALWAYS accepted.

Review and Re-checks

After the first round of editing, I will send you a report along with the annotated pattern for your review. This is your time to look over my notes, make adjustments, and ask additional questions. We can go back and forth as many times as needed until you feel that your pattern is ready for testing. Once testing is complete, I offer one final, complimentary re-check of the pattern if any last minute changes need to be made.

Invoicing & Feedback

Once you feel that your pattern is ready to go, I will send over an invoice to be paid within one week of receipt. I will also send an optional questionnaire as I love feedback from all of my clients. Both praise and constructive criticism are welcome.

  • “Working with Katelyn is a pleasure. She is very communicative, clearly explains everything at every stage of editing. She carefully checks the numbers, clears things up, and since English is not my first language, her suggestions are very helpful. At the same time, she gives a sense of control over the introduced changes. I highly recommend working with Katelyn.”

    — Anna Obrzud, Woolfans

  • “Katelyn is a fiber arts biz owner’s dream! She speaks our language. I presented her with an online project that would have taken a non-yarn-native twice as long to complete. Katelyn completed the project beautifully and with clear communication. I highly recommend her to those of us who’d rather be playing with yarn than anything else!”

    — Kari Capone, The Spinning Hand

  • “Katelyn was great to work with. She explained the tech editing process clearly and did a thorough job of editing my pattern. She has a very light touch, ensuring that I always felt in control of any changes to be made. Thanks Katelyn!”

    — Susan Distel

  • “What a great way to get a professional set of eyes on my pattern. I strive to provide easy to follow and flowing design and having Katelyn go over and privide constructive feedback makes all the difference.”

    — Rebecca Hodo, Crafty Bama Stitch

FAQs

  • I am currently accepting new clients. Please contact me using the form below so we can discuss your needs. As long as projects are not last-minute, I should have no problem fitting you in.

  • All tech editing and related services are $35 USD per hour (one hour minimum). The time it takes to complete a tech edit will vary depending on the complexity and accuracy of the pattern. Time is accurately tracked by the minute and timesheets will be provided with your final invoice. Estimates can be provided only after I see the pattern.

  • For patterns, I prefer to work with PDFs, however, I will also work with Google Docs, or Microsoft Word.

    • For documents, I use Google Docs and Microsoft Word.

    • For photos, and graphics, I use Affinity Photo, and Canva.

    • For charts, diagrams, and schematics, I use Stitch Fiddle, StitchMastery, and Affinity Design.

    • For pattern layouts, I use Affinity Publisher.

  • I suppose I could, but I do not recommend it. Pattern grading is such a big task on it’s own, it’s best to have a separate tech editor check over the work.

  • The more information that you can provide me, the better! Along with the pattern, I also recommend that you provide a style sheet and a variety of photos (both overhead and close up shots).

  • Possibly depending on my work load at that moment. It never hurts to ask.
